A shooting incident involving Fort Atkinson police resulted in the death of a man late Sunday evening. Officers responded to a disturbance call on Washington Street around 5 p.m., where shots were reportedly fired inside a residence. Upon arrival, police surrounded the home, and during the standoff, one officer discharged their weapon, hitting the individual inside, who was subsequently airlifted to a Madison hospital but did not survive the injuries.
As part of the ongoing investigation, the Wisconsin Department of Justice has confirmed that the officer who fired the shot was wearing a body camera and has since been placed on administrative leave—a standard procedure following such incidents. Investigators recovered a rifle from the scene that did not belong to the police, raising questions about the circumstances surrounding the incident. The findings of the investigation will be submitted to the Jefferson County District Attorney for review once completed.
