FSU Alum’s Play Focuses on Mental Health and Gun Violence

Micah Johnson, a Florida State University alumnus and associate professor, premieres his one-man show “On Sight” in Tallahassee, focusing on the crucial issues of mental health and youth gun violence. This performance, set to unveil at the Challenger Learning Center, is a reflection of Johnson’s own turbulent childhood experiences growing up near Orlando, where he faced violence at an early age, including having a gun pulled on him at just 12 years old.

The 55-minute show combines humor and drama to spark discussion on these pressing topics and is tied to the 45th anniversary celebration of the Mu Epsilon Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity. With gun violence being the leading cause of death among youth, Johnson aims to use theater as a transformative tool for advocacy and awareness in the community. Seating for the event is limited but there is an option for overflow attendance, emphasizing the significant interest in the narrative Johnson hopes to share.
