GA Senate Considers Tax Credit for Gun Safety Measures

The Georgia State Senate is poised to review a new bill that would introduce a tax credit of up to $300 for taxpayers who invest in secure firearm storage devices or complete gun safety courses. This initiative follows growing demands for stricter gun regulations, especially in light of last year’s tragic school shooting at Apalachee High School, which has renewed calls for more effective measures to prevent firearm accidents and suicides among youth.

House Bill 79, recently passed by the state house, allocates a maximum of $10 million annually to support these credits and underscores the pressing issue of child access to firearms. Advocates, including some lawmakers, argue that while the tax credit is a step forward, more comprehensive legislation is necessary to require safe storage practices in homes with children. With the bill set to run from 2026 through 2031, it aims to address a significant public safety concern impacting families across Georgia.
