Gangs Driving Youth Crime Surge in South Carolina

Law enforcement officials in South Carolina testify that a surge in youth gun violence is primarily driven by gang activity, highlighting an urgent need for legislative action. During a recent committee meeting, S.C. Law Enforcement Division Chief Mark Keel emphasized that juvenile violent crime is rising at an alarming rate, fueled by a dangerous mix of drugs, guns, and gangs.

Lawmakers are considering a Senate bill to impose harsher penalties for gang-related offenses, potentially sentencing gang leaders to between five to 25 years in prison. Chief Keel advocates for proactive measures to deter youth from gang involvement, including expanding a federal initiative called Project Ceasefire, which outlines the consequences of repeat offenses and connects offenders to supportive resources. Local officials urge parents to monitor signs of gang involvement in their children to prevent further escalation.
