Gov. Stein Vetoes First Bills on Gun and Immigration Laws

North Carolina Governor Josh Stein has vetoed his first bills, putting a temporary halt to Republican initiatives that would permit concealed carry of handguns without a permit and increase state agency involvement in immigration enforcement. Stein’s vetoes come just months into his tenure and return the measures to a legislature where Republicans are narrowly short of a veto-proof majority, igniting potential attempts to override his decisions as early as next week.

Among the vetoed bills, one notably allows individuals as young as 18 to carry concealed weapons, a proposal Stein argues undermines public safety by removing necessary training requirements. In contrast, Republican leaders assert that such legislation would empower law-abiding citizens to exercise their Second Amendment rights without onerous barriers. As the political landscape evolves, the implications of these vetoes could reshape discussions around gun rights and immigration policies in North Carolina.
