Greenport Launches Deer Hunting Permit Lottery Aug. 1

The Greenport Board of Trustees announces a lottery for up to 15 deer hunting permits, beginning August 1, following their July 24 meeting approval. The permits, allowing bow hunting in designated zones of Moore’s Woods, will be available for community applications until September 30, aiming to balance the white-tailed deer population in the area.

Village clerk Candace Hall notes that this year’s approach maintains the past limit of one permit per zone while allowing more applicants the opportunity to hunt. Increased deer populations can lead to landscaping damage, crop losses, and heightened risks of Lyme disease, as well as contributing to roughly 65,000 deer-related vehicle collisions annually across New York State. Understanding these impacts makes the lottery a vital step in ensuring community safety and ecological balance.
