Gun Ban Challenge Moves to SCOTUS; COVID Fraud Sentencing

The U.S. Supreme Court may soon weigh in on the contentious issue of gun rights, as the Second Amendment Foundation petitions the court to challenge Cook County’s ban on semi-automatic firearms. This legal battle, which originated in 2021 and has seen lower court rulings uphold the prohibition, could set significant precedents, especially with a statewide ban recently enacted in Illinois.

In another notable legal development, a federal judge sentences Samuel W. Jackson, a former Chicago resident, to 18 months in prison for his involvement in a scheme to fraudulently secure nearly $2 million from COVID relief funds. Jackson’s fraudulent activities included lavish spending on luxury vehicles and entertainment, raising questions about the stewardship of emergency funds intended to support struggling businesses during the pandemic.
