Gun Buyers Sidestep Background Checks in Many States

A significant number of U.S. states permit gun buyers to bypass background checks, creating a major loophole that raises concerns about gun ownership eligibility and public safety. Currently, research indicates that 22 states have enacted measures to require background checks even for private sales, while the remaining 27 states maintain lax regulations, allowing individuals prohibited from owning firearms to acquire them with relative ease.

The absence of universal background check laws correlates with higher firearm mortality rates, as shown by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data. For instance, 13 out of the 15 states with the lowest gun death rates have implemented expanded background check laws, while those lacking such regulations often face increased gun violence and related economic costs, emphasizing a critical link between firearm policy and community safety.
