He argues that if these figures are adjusted to exclude Black males, the narrative surrounding gun violence drastically changes, framing it as a separate issue related to “gangland violence.” This assertion sparked controversy as lawmakers advocating for gun control cited the CDC’s data on gun violence as the leading cause of death for American children.
Despite his insistence that there was no racial intent behind his statement, LoRusso later acknowledged that it “came off horrible” and expressed a desire to apologize to those offended. His comments were made during debates on two Republican-sponsored gun bills that ultimately failed in committee. The RMGO is currently involved in legal action against several Colorado municipalities for attempting to implement gun violence legislation, highlighting the ongoing tension between gun rights advocates and gun control supporters in the state.
