Gun Ownership Rates Vary Dramatically by State

Gun ownership in the United States showcases significant disparities across states, with some experiencing firearm sales rates more than double the national average. In 2023, Montana tops the list, with a staggering 106.3 firearms sold for every 1,000 residents, while the national average stands at 45 firearms sold per 1,000 people. This trend is influenced by state regulations, as seven of the ten states with the highest gun sales have the weakest gun control laws, according to Giffords Law Center’s grading system.

The gun and ammunition industry remains a robust economic sector, generating over $90 billion in 2023 alone. Despite a dip in sales following the surge in 2020, American consumers still purchased a minimum of 15.2 million firearms in the last year. Such statistics underline the enduring cultural and economic significance of firearms in certain regions, raising essential questions about gun policy and public safety across the U.S.
