A court trial is underway following the tragic death of 18-year-old Peter Colwell, who was fatally shot outside the Ship Inn pub in Llanbedrog on February 5, 2017. Prosecutors allege that “cavalier disregard” for gun safety by gamekeepers Ben Andrew Wilson and Benjamin George Fitzsimons resulted in the incident, where a shotgun, owned by Wilson, accidentally discharged while Fitzsimons was handling it in the front passenger seat of a vehicle, aimed inappropriately towards Colwell.
During the proceedings at Caernarfon Crown Court, it was revealed that the firearm had been left accessible and visible to passersby after a night out that included alcohol consumption. Prosecutor Patrick Harrington emphasized that the gun’s safety catch was off, with a live cartridge still in the breach at the time of the incident. The trial, expected to last three weeks, highlights critical questions regarding gun safety protocols among individuals entrusted with handling such firearms.
