A $25,000 gun violence prevention grant from the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office has yielded positive outcomes for youth programs this past summer, evidenced by a notable 45% decline in shootings. Beneficiaries like Emergent Works and New Yorkers Against Gun Violence (NYAGV) utilized the funds to support at-risk young people, offering programs that not only provided stipends but also focused on professional development and community engagement.
Participants engaged in creative projects such as music production and mentorship, enabling them to explore social issues through a unique lens. One participant, Zeek, shared that the stipend helped him purchase essential school supplies, highlighting how these initiatives empower youth and reshape their perceptions of justice within their communities. “When they see someone from the D.A.’s Office who is funneling money to communities… it changes things for them,” said NYAGV Education Director Shaina Harrison, emphasizing the transformative potential of these grants.
