Hamilton College Report Highlights Youth Gun Violence in Utica

Hamilton College’s Arthur Levitt Public Affairs Center has unveiled a detailed report addressing the complex causes and potential interventions for youth gun violence in Utica, New York. This study, conducted by 16 students as part of the Fall 2024 Justice Lab, highlights five critical factors influencing youth gun violence, including social environment and intergenerational trauma, while recommending targeted economic revitalization and community support programs.

Key findings indicate that 30% of survey respondents had personal connections to gun violence, illustrating the pressing nature of the issue. With Utica Mayor Michael Galime confirming the city’s ongoing efforts in addressing these challenges, the report proposes actionable strategies such as restorative justice training for police and enhanced mentorship programs. The recommendations aim to foster a safer future for the youth in Utica and suggest models that could be applicable to other communities facing similar challenges.
