Hamilton police are on track to set a five-year record for gun seizures, with 288 firearms linked to criminal activity confiscated since January. This figure surpasses previous annual totals of 259 in 2024 and 160 in 2023, as well as nearly matching the high of 289 seized in 2022, indicating a troubling increase in weapons available to local criminals.
Superintendent Marty Schulenberg highlights a significant correlation between the rise in crime guns and the city’s organized criminal activities, including drug trafficking and violent crime. Notably, more than 90% of the seized weapons originate from the United States, raising concerns about the accessibility of firearms. The police’s dedicated effort to combat these issues has led to a 47% decrease in shootings in 2025 compared to last year, showing that strategic enforcement is effective, yet the presence of firearms remains a critical concern.
