Harlem Students Demand Action on Gun Violence

Students from Democracy Prep Harlem High School recently gathered at the Africa Center for a youth violence prevention forum, calling for urgent action to address gun violence in their communities. Organized by the Joseph Gabriel Foundation, the event featured student performances highlighting the impact of violence, alongside a panel of experts discussing solutions, including mental health support and community investment strategies.

Statistics reveal alarming trends; in 2024, robbery and assault victims under 18 in New York reached a five-year high. This forum not only emphasizes the need for safety and preventive measures but also highlights the resilience and creativity of young people eager to participate in discussions that affect their futures. “I should be able to go outside and feel like I’m safe,” remarked Rayne Blake, a tenth grader, underscoring the urgency of the dialogue surrounding youth safety today.
