A visiting Harvard Law professor, Carlos Portugal Gouvêa, reaches a plea deal after firing a pellet gun near Temple Beth Zion in Brookline, resulting in six months of probation. Gouvêa, who claimed he was hunting rats, was arrested as congregants observed the beginning of Yom Kippur, prompting a temporary lockdown of the synagogue. Although prosecutors dismissed three charges linked to the incident, Gouvêa will pay restitution for damages caused by a pellet that shattered a car window.
The incident raised immediate concerns within the community, although Temple Beth Zion later asserted there was no evidence of antisemitism. Gouvêa, also an associate professor at the University of São Paulo Law School, is presently on administrative leave from Harvard as the institution investigates. His legal team maintains that Gouvêa’s actions were not intended to instill fear, adding a layer of complexity to this unfolding story.
