Dakota County’s plan to transform Bud’s Landing, a historic river access favored by duck hunters for decades, has been approved, effectively cutting waterfowlers out of the site they have relied on since the 1930s. The $4.6 million redevelopment will cater to canoers, kayakers, and other outdoor enthusiasts, while banning traditional duck hunting boats and motorized watercraft, prompting disappointment among long-time hunters who cherished the area’s safe launching conditions.
Former Dakota County Commissioner Joe Harris, who has been using the site for years, notes that even with new amenities planned, the redesign may not adequately accommodate the needs of duck hunters. The changes have also sparked concerns regarding the legacy of Bud Joseph, the late owner of Bud’s Landing, whose warm welcome of hunters and families helped establish the site’s historic significance. Local hunters now fear they are losing their beloved escape to other user groups.
