Saint Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City responds to a troubling rise in gunshot wound cases by offering free gun safety locks to the community. The hospital has reported a 52% increase in adults treated for gunshot wounds at its Level One Trauma Center from 2019 to 2024, prompting this initiative to promote safer gun storage and prevent accidental injuries, particularly among children.
Dr. Andrew Benedict, trauma medical director at the hospital, highlights the urgent need for secure firearm storage, noting that 30% of American children live in homes with firearms. Each free gun lock includes detailed instructions and a suicide awareness card, reinforcing the hospital’s commitment to addressing this critical public health issue. The locks are available at all 22 Saint Luke’s primary care and convenient care locations, as well as several community partners.
