A Houston police officer shot and killed a man on Thursday evening after he allegedly charged at officers while wielding a knife. The incident occurred as three officers responded to a call about a man harming himself at a residence on West Sam Houston Parkway, where the situation quickly escalated beyond verbal de-escalation efforts, according to Assistant Chief James Skelton.
The officers retreated upon encountering the armed man, but a 23-year-old officer with a year and a half of experience discharged his weapon when the individual became a danger. Authorities confirm the man was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Harris County District Attorney’s Office is currently investigating the shooting, and body camera footage from the scene is expected to be released within 30 days, raising questions about the officers’ response to a mental health crisis.
