Illinois Police Allocate $1M for Gun Enforcement Grants

Illinois State Police (ISP) are distributing approximately $1 million in firearm enforcement grants to 21 police departments across the state, including major cities such as Chicago and Aurora. These grants aim to assist law enforcement in removing firearms from individuals whose legal right to own a gun has been revoked, often due to criminal convictions or mental health concerns.

ISP Director Brendan Kelly emphasizes that while revoking a Firearm Owner’s ID (FOID) card is a standard procedure, the real challenge lies in ensuring that firearms are physically removed from those deemed a threat to public safety. The funding will help cover the associated investigative costs, with significant allocations such as over $425,000 going to Chicago Police. As the state continues to confront gun violence, these proactive efforts target the intersection of lawful gun ownership and public safety.
