Indiana Appeals Court Asked to Dismiss Gary Gun Lawsuit

Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita seeks to have the appeals court dismiss the City of Gary’s 26-year-old lawsuit against gun industry defendants, including major manufacturers. This action comes after a state law enacted last year retroactively removed the authority of Gary and other Indiana municipalities to sue gun companies, a pivotal change that Rokita argues should block the lawsuit’s progression.

The legal battle originally began in August 1999 when Gary accused multiple firearm manufacturers and retailers of contributing to crime through their products. A Lake Superior Court judge had refused to dismiss the lawsuit, stating that terminating it would violate constitutional rights, highlighting the ongoing conflict between state law and local governance regarding gun liability.
