Inquiry Sought Into Gun Industry’s Data Practices

Gun Owners for Safety has formally requested a federal investigation into the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) for allegedly sharing sensitive personal information of gun buyers with political operatives without their consent. This call for scrutiny follows a ProPublica investigation revealing that at least ten gun industry businesses, including major manufacturers like Glock and Smith & Wesson, provided customer data over nearly two decades, raising serious privacy and ethical concerns.

In its letter to the FBI, Federal Trade Commission, and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, the group highlights the NSSF’s practices as “underhanded,” especially given the personal data used for political campaigning. Over 6,000 impacted individuals voiced their outrage at learning their information had been compiled secretly, underscoring the broader implications for privacy rights in the firearms community. The inquiry may face challenges under the current administration, complicating the accountability of organizations involved in the controversial data collection.
