Investigations Protecting Officers Under Scrutiny

Investigations conducted by the Milwaukee Area Investigative Team (MAIT) into police shootings in Wisconsin are facing increasing scrutiny for potentially favoring officers under investigation. Analysis reveals that these investigations allow officers to be interviewed as witnesses rather than suspects, often without a Miranda warning, and even permit them to change their statements after reviewing video evidence. From 2019 to 2022, not a single officer faced charges in any of the 17 cases reviewed, prompting concerns over accountability within law enforcement.

Families of victims, such as Taleavia Cole, whose brother Alvin was killed by an officer, report feeling suspicion and emotional disregard from investigators. With 82% of reviewed cases involving agencies that also participated in the investigations, the promise of independent scrutiny appears compromised. Advocates and experts continue to emphasize the need for reform to ensure judicial integrity when investigating police actions against civilians.
