The SHINE project at Shortridge High School is striving to create a safe haven for teens while simultaneously addressing the rising concern of youth gun violence. Founded by social worker Chelsea English, the initiative provides students with a platform to plan and participate in community events, emphasizing Safety, Health, Inclusion, and Nurturing Environments.
In light of recent incidents, including a mass shooting over the Fourth of July weekend, community leaders are actively seeking solutions. English believes that more proactive measures, such as funding for events and supplies, are essential for long-term impact. With an estimated annual cost of $4,000, the program is calling for donations to fully support its mission and aims to eventually expand to all IPS high schools.
