The city of Jeanerette recently gathered nearly 300 participants for a Gun Violence Awareness Walk and community festival aimed at addressing the ongoing issue of gun violence. The event, organized by the Forever Oshaun Foundation, included a 1.7-mile walk where families affected by gun violence united to chant “stop gun violence” and share their experiences while advocating for change.
Following the walk, attendees enjoyed a community festival featuring food, games, and valuable resources such as mentorship opportunities. Organizers Ashly Drexler and Demetra Smith hope the event not only provides support for those grieving the loss of loved ones to gun violence but also inspires the youth in Jeanerette to pursue peaceful resolutions rather than resorting to conflict. “If the young people see that adults can come together, maybe one day they’ll realize that it’s not always conflict,” said Drexler.
