Joplin Considers Urban Hunting to Manage Deer Population

The Joplin City Council is set to discuss an ordinance that would permit bow hunting of deer on private property within city limits, aiming to address the growing urban deer population. With increasing reports of deer-vehicle collisions, city officials recognize the need for effective population control measures, prompting this ordinance to be considered on first reading next Monday.

Under the proposal, hunters must meet specific requirements, including holding both state and local permits, and must be at least 21 years old. The ordinance also outlines safety measures, such as prohibiting arrow discharge within 60 feet of residences, and only allows the use of fully manual bows. As cities like Jefferson City and Kansas City implement managed hunts, Joplin’s initiative may provide new insights into urban wildlife management.
