Kansas and Missouri Receive Failing Grades in Gun Safety

Kansas and Missouri have both received failing grades in the Giffords Law Center’s 2025 Annual Gun Law Scorecard, reflecting ongoing concerns about gun safety in the U.S. Despite improvements in firearm death rates—with Kansas reporting 15.4 deaths per 100,000 residents and Missouri at 19.8—the two states rank poorly, placing 42nd and 46th, respectively, for gun law strength. The report notes that Kansas had 482 firearm-related deaths in 2025 and highlights a lack of significant legislative action to enhance gun safety measures.

Nationally, the report reveals that 24 states received F grades, indicating a troubling trend in gun legislation. Notably, Mississippi leads with the highest gun death rate at 28.1 per 100,000 residents, while states like California and Hawaii are recognized for their stronger gun laws. The Giffords Law Center emphasizes the need for initiatives such as universal background checks, suggesting that public opinion largely supports such measures, yet many remain unimplemented in these states. This stark contrast prompts calls for immediate action from policymakers to address gun violence more effectively.
