Kentucky legislators have passed a new regulation that adjusts hunting and fishing license fees based on the national Consumer Price Index (CPI), a significant move designed to enhance fiscal transparency and stability for the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. This biennial adjustment process will commence in January 2026, using CPI data from 2024 and 2025 to revise costs for licenses and permits, allowing residents to anticipate future price changes more accurately.
The new regulation also introduces several changes, including a reduced-cost $35 sportsman’s license for first-time residents and the implementation of a $10 permit for bobcat hunting. Given the adjustments, current prices remain available until the CPI-based increase takes effect, prompting hunters and anglers to consider purchasing before the scheduled hike. These changes reflect a commitment to sustainable funding for wildlife services and help ensure the department can meet the needs of both the community and wildlife conservation.
