Kentucky’s Spring Hunting Season Begins with Youth Turkey Days

Kentucky’s spring hunting season opens with a youth-only turkey season set for April 5-6, followed by the general turkey season from April 12 to May 4. Zak Danks, Wild Turkey Program coordinator with the Kentucky Department for Fish and Wildlife Resources, indicates a promising season ahead, citing a high number of younger turkeys, or jakes, captured during winter research. This suggests that both youth and inexperienced hunters may have a favorable chance at success, as these younger birds are generally easier to hunt.

In addition to encouraging youth participation, Danks highlights the importance of preparation, advising new hunters to utilize resources like the Kentucky Fish and Wildlife’s “Learn to Hunt Turkey” webpage. With regulations allowing only two turkeys per spring season, and only one bearded turkey permissible per day in designated wildlife management areas, hunters should strategize accordingly. For those lacking private land, public areas managed by the Kentucky Fish and Wildlife offer prime hunting opportunities, particularly in recently burned sites with regrowth attractive to turkeys.
