Lake County Prosecutor Bernard Carter recently addresses third-grade students at Benjamin Harrison Elementary School in East Chicago, launching a new Gun Safety Literacy Program aimed at enhancing firearm awareness among children. The initiative, utilizing the S.A.F.E. method—Stop, Avoid Touching the gun, Find an Adult, and Exit the Area—encourages children to react appropriately if they encounter a firearm, helping to establish a strong foundation for safety from a young age.
With recent tragic incidents involving children and unsecured firearms, this program becomes increasingly critical. Carter emphasizes that “Our children’s safety is non-negotiable,” reinforcing the importance of these lessons in preventing future tragedies. The program includes interactive activities and relatable scenarios to foster open communication about gun risks between children, parents, and law enforcement, aiming to mitigate the threat posed by unsecured weapons in homes and communities.
