Las Cruces Man Receives 12-Year Sentence for Fentanyl Trafficking

Jaime Lopez, a 35-year-old resident of Las Cruces, is sentenced to 12 years in prison after pleading guilty to possession with intent to distribute approximately 690 fentanyl pills, alongside being a felon in possession of a firearm. The case, spearheaded by the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the FBI, underscores the serious implications of drug trafficking and illegal weapons possession in the region.

In May 2024, Lopez attempted to evade law enforcement during a traffic stop linked to an outstanding warrant, ultimately leading to his arrest where officers discovered a stolen handgun in his vehicle. Lopez’s prior conviction for second-degree murder underscores a troubling history, raising concerns about public safety and the ongoing battle against fentanyl-related crimes. Upon his release, he will face five years of supervised release.
