According to new data from the Gun Violence Archive, the United States has experienced 327 mass shootings as of October 1, 2023, with 283 fatalities and 1,480 injuries. While this year marks a decline in both the number of incidents and deaths compared to recent years, mass shootings continue to underscore the complex issue of gun violence in the country.
Mass shootings, defined as incidents with at least four victims injured or killed, accounted for only about 3% of all gun murders. In 2021, the number of mass shootings peaked at a record-breaking 689. However, 2023 follows a trend towards fewer shootings, as experts note that this year’s figures are on track to approach pre-2020 levels. Notably, the deadliest attack occurred in Lewiston, Maine, claiming 18 lives and highlighting the persistent impact of mass shootings across the nation.
