House lawmakers have passed a plan to reduce military suicides by offering service members personal gun safes, locks, and other safety devices for storing their firearms. Proposed by Representative Jackie Speier, D-Calif., this six-year pilot program aims to create secure storage options for voluntarily participating troops at five selected installations, following a recent bill approval that passed by a vote of 226-203.
Statistics highlight the urgency of this initiative, as firearms accounted for 64% of active-duty suicides in 2020, with even higher percentages in Reserve and National Guard cases. Following the completion of the pilot program, the Pentagon is required to report to Congress on its effectiveness in curbing suicide rates, potentially influencing future policies on military safety and mental health.
