Lawmakers Reintroduce Disarm Hate Act for Gun Control

A coalition of lawmakers, led by Congresswoman Veronica Escobar, reintroduces the Disarm Hate Act, aiming to block individuals convicted of violent misdemeanor hate crimes from purchasing or possessing firearms. This legislation seeks to address a critical loophole in federal law highlighted by disturbing incidents of hate-fueled mass shootings in the United States, including the tragic attack in El Paso in 2019.

Escobar emphasizes the urgent need to combat the lethal combination of bigotry and easy access to firearms, stating, “When bigotry is combined with easy access to assault weapons, the result is a devastating and lethal threat.” Supported by several advocacy groups and bipartisan lawmakers, the bill underscores a broader push for firearm regulation to protect communities targeted by hate. The time for action is now, as lives hang in the balance.
