Maine Considers New Permit for Coyote Baiting

The Maine legislature is considering LD 937, a proposed bill that would mandate a permit for hunters wishing to bait coyotes in specific wildlife management districts. This legislation, introduced by Rep. Richard Mason, R-Lisbon, aims to help preserve deer wintering areas, a crucial aspect of the state’s wildlife management efforts.

If passed, hunters will need to secure a $4 permit from the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, effective from September 1 to December 15, which targets Wildlife Management Districts 1-14, 18, 19, 27, and 28. The bill also establishes penalties for violations, with a minimum fine of $50 for each infraction, ensuring compliance with existing coyote baiting laws while encouraging responsible hunting practices in areas crucial for deer populations.
