Survivors of Maine’s deadliest mass shooting, which left 18 people dead in October 2023, are now suing the U.S. government for alleged negligence. The lawsuit claims that the Army could have intervened and prevented the attack by reservist Robert Card, who had a documented history of mental health issues, including paranoia and violent behavior, prior to the shootings.
A governor-appointed commission concluded that multiple chances to intervene were missed by Army officials and local law enforcement, raising critical questions about accountability. The plaintiffs argue that despite knowing Card had access to firearms and was a significant threat, the Army failed to remove his weapons or notify authorities, ultimately allowing a preventable tragedy to occur.
