In Maine, advocates are calling for the implementation of an Extreme Risk Protection Order, commonly known as a “red flag law,” to address gun safety issues. Currently, 21 states have adopted similar laws, aimed at temporarily restricting access to firearms for individuals deemed at risk of harming themselves or others, a measure that could prove crucial in preventing suicides and violent incidents.
The push for this law comes on the heels of a tragic mass shooting in Lewiston, which prompted renewed scrutiny of existing mental health support systems. Critics argue that Maine’s current “yellow flag law” is inadequate and burdensome, highlighting the urgent need to improve the legal framework for gun safety and mental health intervention in the state.
