A Georgia man is in custody after bringing a rifle to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport while threatening to “shoot it up.” Authorities report that 49-year-old Billy Joe Cagle drove to the airport amid a mental health crisis, prompting his family to alert police about his intentions just hours before his arrival.
Upon arriving at the terminal, officers discovered an AR-15 rifle and ammunition in Cagle’s truck. Police apprehended him walking inside the terminal within minutes of receiving the alert, potentially averting a disaster that Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens said could have resulted in “twenty-seven or more lives” being lost. The collaboration between law enforcement and the suspect’s family played a crucial role in preventing the incident.
