A southeast Houston man is charged with unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon and injury to a child after a 4-year-old boy found a loaded gun and shot himself in the head. The incident took place inside an apartment where the boy’s mother and her boyfriend, Nicholas Zepeda-Quintanilla, were present; Zepeda-Quintanilla had previously been convicted of a felony and was out on bond at the time of the shooting.
Investigators allege that Zepeda-Quintanilla brought the unsecured firearm into the residence and placed it on a shelf before falling asleep with the child’s mother. Authorities confirm that the boy is hospitalized for treatment following the incident, which highlighted the dangers of improper gun storage. Meanwhile, the couple’s toddler daughter, who was also in the apartment, was unharmed and is currently with her grandmother.
