Man Convicted in Roommate’s Fatal Shooting Over Door Lock

A jury in Kansas City convicts 47-year-old Robert E. Matlock Jr. of 2nd Degree Murder and Armed Criminal Action following a fatal shooting of his roommate during a 2021 argument. The court recommends an 18-year sentence for the murder after hearing how the conflict erupted over a locked door leading to Matlock’s medical marijuana supply in their shared home.

During the trial, prosecutor Melesa Johnson emphasized that the “castle doctrine” does not justify deadly force in shared living spaces, challenging Matlock’s claim of self-defense. Evidence included video footage Matlock provided, which depicted the shooting, solidifying the jury’s decision that the victim was unarmed and posed no immediate threat. Matlock faces sentencing on March 20.
