Man Granted Parole After 24 Years for Armed Robbery

After spending 24 years in prison for a second-degree murder conviction, Kevin Jackmon is set for release on Feb. 20, pending the completion of his associate’s degree at Massasoit Community College this spring. Jackmon’s journey from incarceration to education underscores the role of rehabilitative programs in his transformation, as he prepares to spend an additional 90 days in lower security as part of his parole conditions.

The case dates back to a 1998 armed robbery at a New Bedford McDonald’s, where a violent confrontation led to the accidental death of his accomplice, Demarco Traynum. Despite significant opposition from Traynum’s family during his parole hearing, the board’s assessment deemed Jackmon a low risk based on his limited disciplinary history and educational progress, drawing attention to the complexities of rehabilitation and public safety in the parole process.
