A 46-year-old man, Edmund Welsh, has been sentenced to five years in prison for keeping a cache of illegal firearms valued at £44,000 in a converted wardrobe in his home in County Durham. Welsh was found with 42 firearms, including 20 antiques and various ammunition, after customs officials notified firearms officers about his illegal imports from the U.S.
Experts reveal that Welsh, a former licensed gun owner and member of a shooting club, had spent over 20 years amassing the collection, which included homemade ammunition-making tools. While his defense painted him as an enthusiastic collector rather than a threat, the court highlighted the dangers posed by his actions, ultimately deciding that his remorse and circumstances could not outweigh the risks of unlawful possession of firearms.
