On September 5, hundreds of students from duPont Manual High School in Louisville staged a walkout to advocate for stricter gun control, specifically calling for a ban on assault weapons. The event was organized by the school’s chapter of Students Demand Action, responding to the tragic shooting at Annunciation Catholic Church in Minneapolis that resulted in the deaths of two young children and injuries to 18 others.
The movement highlights a growing concern among students, who contend that gun violence is the leading cause of death for their peers. Senior Viet Pham emphasized the urgency for lawmakers to enact change, while students expressed the need for safe learning environments free from the threat of gun violence. They seek dialogue with legislators from both sides of the aisle, stating that public safety transcends political affiliation.
