Dozens gathered at Springfield City Hall on Wednesday evening for a march aimed at ending gun violence, highlighting the urgent need for community action. Organizers Sydney Mollett and Dion Green shared their personal experiences with gun violence, including the tragic loss of family members, in an emotional plea for change.
The march comes in response to a rise in shooting homicides in Springfield, with seven fatalities reported in the first five months of this year alone. This includes two shootings on May 14 that claimed the lives of 31-year-old Randy Graham and 16-year-old De’Meko Taborn. Local leaders emphasize that recent federal funding cuts have paused efforts to curb gun violence, making community mobilization even more critical for creating safer neighborhoods.
