Marine Corps Standardizes Rifle Squad Size to 13 Members

Marine Corps Commandant Gen. Eric Smith announces that all rifle squads will be standardized to 13 Marines, enhancing their operational effectiveness by incorporating a precision fires specialist. This change comes in response to insights gained from the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, where advanced weaponry and loitering munitions have demonstrated significant tactical advantages in modern warfare.

Under the new structure, each squad will have three fire teams and will be led by a school-trained sergeant. The move is part of a broader strategy to improve combat capabilities and extend the lethal range of Marine infantry units. Additionally, the Marines are forming a dedicated fires and reconnaissance company, consolidating resources to better integrate intelligence and precision fire in combat scenarios.
