Maryland Health Department Launches Gun Violence Grants

The Maryland Department of Health announces two new grant funding opportunities aimed at reducing gun violence across the state. One grant awards up to $25,000 to local health departments focused on firearm safety education and distributing free safety devices, while a larger $200,000 grant will support a statewide community engagement campaign, including a planned summit on gun violence prevention.

Despite significant reductions in crime rates, Maryland continues to face challenges with gun violence, particularly after recent fatal incidents. Homicides in Baltimore City have decreased by 41% since 2021, but community leaders remain concerned after a double shooting in Howard County and the death of a 16-year-old student in Baltimore County. The grants reflect Maryland’s ongoing commitment to innovate solutions in the face of these challenges.
