Massachusetts Sees Rise in Gun Crimes Amid Law Violations

Massachusetts reports a significant rise in gun crimes, with firearms involved in 13,414 incidents over 2022 and 2023, reflecting a nearly 14% increase compared to the previous two years. This spike is largely linked to violations of laws concerning the manufacture, sale, or possession of firearms, with over 51% of reported incidents categorized as Weapons Law Violations, as noted in the latest report from the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security.

The report highlights a troubling trend, with Springfield surpassing Boston in firearm incidents for the first time since at least 2014. In total, the two-year period saw 1,193 firearm-related robberies and 207 homicides or non-negligent manslaughter cases, underlining the urgent need for addressing firearm regulation in the state. Massachusetts had 542,351 active firearm licenses as of January 2024, indicating a 27% increase since 2020, which raises questions about the balance between gun ownership and public safety.
