The Medina Police Department is moving forward with plans to replace its aging .40-caliber pistols with 46 new 9mm firearms, pending City Council approval. Police Chief Ed Kinney emphasizes that these new sidearms, equipped with red dot optics, will significantly enhance officers’ accuracy and target acquisition capabilities, a vital improvement as the department’s current weapons approach the end of their reliable lifespan after over seven years of use.
To help cover the estimated $35,000 cost of the upgrade, the department will trade in its old pistols and some forfeited weapons. Additionally, Chief Kinney has requested authorization for an annual grant application through the Medina County Drug Abuse Commission to fund the salaries of three school resource officers in collaboration with local schools, further expanding the department’s community support efforts.
