The Michigan State Police (MSP) launches a new initiative to foster connections between law enforcement and youth by hosting a Youth Violence Prevention Summit in five locations across the state this fall. At the recent event in Grand Rapids, nearly 200 students engaged with motivational speakers and participated in discussions about violence prevention, highlighting the importance of student input in addressing safety issues in schools.
MSP Director Col. James F. Grady II emphasizes the need for students to understand their role in violence prevention and to utilize available resources like the OK2SAY tip line. Following a rise in school-related gun violence, including the tragic incidents at the Oxford School and Michigan State University, this summit seeks to equip students with coping skills and promote proactive dialogue about safety. With additional summits set for November and December, the MSP aims to cultivate a culture of collaboration to better protect Michigan’s youth.
