The Michigan State Police (MSP) are giving away free gun locks to promote safe gun storage practices, especially in homes with children, following the implementation of a new safe storage law. This initiative aims to address alarming statistics showing that one in three American homes with children under 18 owns a firearm, and many children are aware of where these guns are kept. In the first few months since the law took effect, at least three individuals have been charged with violations, underscoring the law’s relevance and urgency.
MSP emphasizes that the law mandates firearms be stored securely to prevent access by minors, a crucial preventive measure given that over 100 children aged 0 to 14 die annually from accidental gunshot wounds in the U.S. The upcoming community event on June 12 will offer families opportunities to obtain these locks, alongside engaging activities aimed at fostering community relations and raising awareness about firearm safety. “If we run out, we’ll make more available,” said MSP Lieutenant Kim Vetter, highlighting their commitment to ensuring responsible gun ownership.
